Homing / Carrier Pigeons do not migrate.
Historically they fly about but return to where they were born and raised.
A message may be written on thin light paper, rolled into a small tube, and attached to a messenger pigeon's leg. Throughout history they travel back to the place where raised that they have identified as their home. Sending messages in this manner is known as “pigeon post".
The sender and the receiver both raise pigeons and then swap their birds. This allows them to send messages back and forth.
Pigeons have remarkable navigation skills.
Utilizing magnetic fields, the sun, and landmarks pigeons can find their way back home from 100’s or 1,000 of miles away.
On average they fly at 60 miles an hour and can reach up to 90-100 in burst.
In addition to delivering messages many individuals enjoy racing pigeons. It’s a popular sporting event. Pigeons have a designated starting point where a numbered band is assigned and placed on their leg. Once released from the starting line they race home where their owner, friend or another family member is waiting. That person removes the numbered band placing it into a special timing device. The pigeon that makes it back home that travels the fastest wins the grand prize.
Unlike farm animals pigeons can be raised in the city. They produce rapidly and can also be a source of food security. They are highly nutritious. Their lean, dark poultry meat is prized in many cultures as a delicacy, offering high protein, essential amino acids, iron, copper, and zinc, with lower fat than many meats, a rich taste sometimes compared to duck.
They are members of the Dove family are easy to handle and make a gentle cooing noise that is not disturbing to others.
