Woodside is of state significance in the area of architecture as a rare example of a Victorian Gothic residence. Although no survey exists to prove it, there are undoubtedly tens of thousands of extant Victorian residences across Louisiana. For these purposes, the Victorian Era is defined as the reign of Queen Victoria (i.e., 1837-1901). Residences in the Gothic style are one of the major hallmarks of the period. In America, they gained nationwide popularity due in part to the pattern books of A. J. Downing and A. J. Davis. Yet the style seems to have made very little impact in Louisiana. There are thought to be only about twenty-five Victorian residences in the Gothic taste in the entire state. Woodside is therefore a rare Louisiana example of a national architectural phenomenon. Its Gothic styling can be seen in its distinctive arcaded gallery and vergeboard treatment. The vergeboard treatment is an important contributor to the overall Gothic effect because, unlike many vergeboards which merely repeat a geometrical design, Woodside's vergeboards form an ogee-pointed arch. Although the house's Gothic elements represent a later modification, they dominate the exterior and enable the house to stand as an example of the Gothic Revival style.
Estimated value after renovation $300,000 +
